How To Style Low Density, Fine Curly Hair

How To Style Low Density, Fine Curly Hair

low density, fine curly hair routine and styling tips

Do you have low density, fine curly hair and you’re struggling to style it? Then, this post is for you.

Below, I have a thin or low density, fine curly hair routine for you and some pretty cool tips and tricks to get a fuller, voluminous look when you style.

Affiliate Disclosure: “This post contains affiliate links, which means I receive a small commission, at no extra cost to you, if you make a purchase using this link.”

Low Density vs Fine Curly Hair

Fine curly hair looks and feels thin in comparison to thicker hair. Fine curly strands can also be more fragile and may break more easily.

Density, on the other hand, refers to how much hair you have. With low-density hair, you can typically see your scalp more easily.

Both can cause styling to be a little more difficult as they can both look weighed down and lymph quite easily.

Even though styling may be a little more challenging, there are tips that you can follow for your curls to be healthy and look their best.

Low Density, Fine Curly Hair Tips

  1. Clarify at least once a month
  2. Use sulfate free shampoos
  3. Style hair when it’s damp
  4. Use light weight styling products
  5. Don’t layer styling products – use One product styling routine
  6. Do not apply curly girl products to your roots
  7. Don’t scrunch your gel to close to the scalp
  8. After drying, separate curl clumps
  9. Fluff roots with fingers or pick

Clarify at least once a month

Low density, thin curly hair should be clarified at least once a month, maybe even twice a month.

Fine curly hair tends to be more susceptible to sweat, oils and product build up on your scalp and hair. When this happens, your curls will be weighed down and look lymph and dull.

Clarifying more often will remove dirt and product build up to keep your curls healthy and reveal well-defined curls.

Use sulfate free shampoos

Sulfate free shampoos are excellent for low density, fine curly hair. They gently cleanse your scalp and hair without stripping your curls.

They remove product build up well and will help with curl definition and shine.

Try some of these curly girl sulfate free shampoos.

Style hair when it’s Wet Or Damp

This tip for your thin or fine curly hair takes a little experiementing on your part. Some curly girls with low density, thin curls get good results when they style on soaking wet hair and other swear by styling on damp hair. So, try out both techniques and she what works best for you.

Use light weight styling products

For low density, fine curly hair, lightweight products are better than heavy curl creams or butters.

Heavier curly hair products will weigh down your curls and leave you with flat, dull curls.

Light weight products won’t weigh down your fine curly hair and will help to make it look voluminous.

So, if you have low density or fine curly hair, avoid curly hair products with butters like shea or coco butter and instead try products that are liquid like milks or mousse or thin gels.

If you still want to use curl creams or butters, you can dilute it with some water in the palm of your hands before applying it to your hair. This will also make the application easier.

Don’t layer styling products – use One product styling routine

Using only one product for your low density, fine curly hair styling routine is sufficient for great results.

Layering products when you have low density, fine curls will weigh it down and create too much product build up.

Do not apply curly girl products to your roots

Applying products to the roots of your hair will weigh it down and prevent you from getting root volume.

Instead, apply your hair to the lower half of your hair strands.

Don’t scrunch your gel to close to the scalp

When scrunching in gel, be careful not to scrunch all the way up to your scalp as this will prevent root volume.

You may even prefer to style with your head upside down.

After drying, separate curl clumps

If you have large curl clumps, gently separate them at this point. Creating lots of smaller curl clumps will add volume for thin, fine curly hair.

Fluff roots with fingers or pick

Shaking or fluffing your roots will help lift the hair at the roots and give you root volume.

Low Density, Fine Curly Hair Routine

This is a great curly hair routine from wash day to styling for your low density, fine curly hair.

  1. Wash with sulfate free shampoo
  2. Condition or Deep Condition
  3. Apply Leave In conditioner or curl cream
  4. Scrunch in gel or mousse
  5. Diffuse
  6. Scrunch Out The Crunch
  7. Fluff and pick roots

Wash with sulfate free shampoo

Wash your scalp and hair with a sulfate free shampoo to remove dirt and product build up. Use a scalp brush to massage and help cleanse your head.

Rise the shampoo thoroughly before moving on to conditioning your hair.

Condition Or Deep Condition

Apply a generous amount of conditioner to the length of your hair. Try not to get too much conditioner on your scalp.

Once you’ve applied your conditioner, you can use a detangling brush to evenly distribute the conditioner and detangle.

After detangling squish to condish to encourage curl definition.

Using this technique to condition your hair helps with curl definition and makes the styling process easier.

Be sure to rinse the conditioner thoroughly.

If you’re deep conditioning, try this deep conditioning routine.

Apply Leave In conditioner Or Lightweight Cream

After using a microfiber towel or cotton t shirt to dry your hair a bit, apply a light leave in conditioner or curl cream to your hair.

You can start from the ends and work your way up but be careful not to apply to your root.

You can use your favorite curly girl brush, like a denman brush or behairful brush to distribute the product evenly. Brushing also helps to reduce frizz.

Next, define your curls in sections. Use your brush in small sections of your hair to avoid large curl clumps.

Hold your brush vertically against your scalp and brush each section away from your scalp (don’t brush down) to encourage lifting.

For the top of your head, brush up and let your curl clumps fall back. This also helps sto create volume at the roots.

Creating smaller curl clumps and ringlets will give your a more voluminous look.

Scrunch in gel or mousse

Once you’ve styled your curls, gently glaze and scrunch in a small amount of your preferred curly girl gel or mousse.

Don’t use too much product, because even though it’s lightweight, if you’re heavy with the gel, it can still weigh down your curls too much.

A light weight gel or mousse that will create a gel cast will help to hold your curls for longer lasting results.

Once, you’ve finished scrunching in your gel, don’t touch your hair anymore and air dry your hair until a gel cast forms.

Diffuse

Once your gel cast has formed, diffuse your hair until it’s completely dry.

Diffusing will help with volume.

If you’re afraid of using heat, you can diffuse on the cool setting.

Scrunch Out The Crunch

After diffusing, use a small amount of oil to scrunch out the crunch. The oil is mainly to prevent frizz but you can skip it and just scrunch.

Be sure to also gently break up any large curl clumps to add volume.

Fluff and pick roots

This is one of the most important steps when you’re styling your low density, fine curly hair. Gently shake the roots of your hair to encourage volume.

You can also use a pick to create extra volume.

Shea Moisture 100% Virgin Coconut Oil Daily Hydration Shampoo Curly Girl Review

This shampoo is sulfate-free but still foams up and lathers well so that you get that “shampoo feeling” when you’re cleaning your hair.

The best thing about this shampoo is that it cleanses your scalp and hair without stripping moisture. So, it leaves your curls feeling very moisturized.

The formula is so gentle and hydrating – my 3a 3b curls really love it. My mom also uses it on her 2b 2c hair and she gets the same results.

Even though the formula is gentle enough to cleanse your hair daily, I would still recommend washing your curly hair or wavy hair less often than that. I typically wash my hair once a week.

After rinsing the shampoo, my scalp and hair felt clean and my hair felt very soft and hydrated. I really love this feeling after I’ve cleansed my hair.

Ingredients:

Shea Moisture 100% Virgin Coconut Oil Daily Hydration Shampoo ingredients

Shea Moisture 100% Virgin Coconut Oil Daily Hydration Conditioner Curly Girl Review

This conditioner is creamy, lightweight, and has a little slip which makes product application and distribution very easy.

Even though it doesn’t have a lot of slip, detangling was very easy for me.

Also, if you love to squish to condish, then you’re in luck because this conditioner will work wonders.

After cleansing my curls with the daily hydration shampoo, I followed the product’s instructions and applied the conditioner to my wet hair from root to ends. Then, I left it in for just 3 minutes and rinsed it thoroughly.

Overall, this conditioner’s formula is very nourishing and moisturizing and leaves my curls feeling soft and hydrated every time. The first few ingredients are very moisturizing and work very well to hydrate your curls and waves.

I noticed a lot less frizz and curl definition after using this conditioner the first time. Every time I use it, I’m confident that I will love my wash day results as it prepares my curls for styling products.

Ingredients:

Shea Moisture 100% Virgin Coconut Oil Daily Hydration Conditioner ingredients

However, it does contain coconut oil so if your hair is sensitive to coconut oil, this conditioner may not work well for you.

Can You Leave in Shea Moisture Daily Hydration Conditioner?

This conditioner is a rinse-out conditioner and for best results, the recommendation on the product’s label is to leave in the conditioner for 3 minutes then rinse out the conditioner.

If you’re looking for a leave-in conditioner, try the one Shea Moisture has for this line.

Ingredients to avoid for curly hair - curly girl method

Ingredients To Avoid For Curly Hair Products – How To Tell If A Curly Girl Product Is Clean

Ingredients To Avoid For Curly Hair Products – How To Tell If A Curly Girl Product Is Clean

ingredients-to-avoid-for-curly-hair-products

For healthy curly hair, it’s important to know the ingredients to avoid for curly hair that will cause damage. Some ingredients in curly girl products can cause dry, frizzy and brittle hair.

Avoiding certain ingredients in your curly girl product will leave your wavy and curly hair healthy, bouncy and well defined.

What Ingredients Should A Curly Girl Avoid

If you’re familiar with the curly girl method, you may already know the broad categories of bad ingredients to avoid for curly hair:

  • Sulfates
  • Silicones
  • Parabens
  • Drying Alcohols
  • Mineral Oils

Bad Ingredients = Bad Things For Curly Hair

These ingredients in your curly girl product have been tested and found to be damaging to your curly or wavy hair in some way. Some actually strip your hair strands, leaving them damaged, frizzy and brittle.

Other bad ingredients for curly and wavy hair can cause so much build-up that it can leave your curls and waves weighed down and you may need harsh shampoos to cleanse properly.

Let’s take a closer look at each category of bad ingredients for your curly or wavy hair and narrow down the specific bad ones in each category.

Sulfates To Avoid For Curly Hair

Sulfates help cleanse your hair and scalp by removing product build up, dirt and oil. The issue is that it may also strip moisture from your hair which will leave your hair and scalp dry and brittle.

To easily spot a sulfate on the ingredient list of your curly girl product, look for ingredients that end in “ate”.

Not all sulfates are terrible and perhaps the worst sulfates for your curly or wavy hair are Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Ammonium LaurylSulfate ALS.

You therefore want to avoid any curly girl product that contains sodium laurly sulfate or ammonium laurth sulfate. Shampoos with these sulfates will foam and lather a lot and will leave your hair feeling “skeaky” clean.

These harsh and damaging sulfates would be pretty easy to spot as they’re typically listed at the top of the ingredient list – maybe the 2nd or 3rd ingredient in your shampoo’s formula.

So let’s take a look at the sulfates you want to avoid in your curly girl product:

  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
  • Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate ALS
  • Triethanolamine Lauryl Sulfate

These sulfates tend to be in shampoos for oil hair types as they do an excellent job of cleansing.

There are some gentler suflates known as laureth sulfates used in some conditioning shampoos. Laureth sulfates are known to clean the scalp and hair well but tend to leave the hair in better condition than cleaning with a lauryl sulfate.

Gentler sulfates to look for in curly girl cleansers but are not curly girl method approved:

  • Sodium laureth sulfate
  • Ammonium laureth Sulfate ALS
  • Triethanolamine laureth Sulfate

surfactants that are ok to use for curly hair but are not curly girl method approved:

  • C146-16 Olefin sulfonate
  • disodium laureth sulfosuccinate
  • sodium carboxylate
  • sodium cocoyl isethionate
  • sodium cocoyl glutamate
  • sodium lauryl sulfocetate
  • sodium methyl cocoyl taurate
  • sodium lauroyl glutamate
  • sodium lauroyl sarcosinate
  • sodium lauryl glucose carboxylate
  • sodium methyl cocoyl taurate

These surfactants give a mild and gentle cleanse for your scalp and hair. These surfactants removes dirt and oil but do not remove silicone buildup.

  • Cocamidopropul betaine
  • coco betaine
  • cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine
  • lauryl hydroxysultaine
  • sodium cocamphoacetate
  • sodium lauroamphoacetate

Some curly girls don’t find that co-washes cleanse their curly hair sufficiently and would prefer to use a product with sulfates.

If your hair isn’t cleansed well you may experience an itchy scalp, clogged pores and even hair loss. Your hair will also stop responding the same with your regular curly girl products as you will be layering it on semi cleansed hair. Your hair may end up looking dull, flaky and weighed down.

The good news is that some sulfates are gentler and can cleanse your hair and scalp well.

So, if you don’t love using co-washes and would like a curly girl cleansing product with a sulfate, try one of these sulfate free shampoos.

No Poo Method – Cleansing Conditioners or Co Washes

The curly girl method recommends a no poo method to cleansing your curly and wavy hair. This no poo method basically suggests ditching shampoos altogether from your curly hair routine and your wavy hair routine.

Instead, to cleanse your hair and scalp they recommend that you cleanse using a conditioner that cleanses. The ingredient list for a curly girl co wash may contain:

  • Behentrimonium chloride
  • Behentrimonium methosulfate
  • Cetrimonium bromide
  • Cetrimonium chloride
  • Dicetyldimonium chloride
  • Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride
  • Stearalkonium chloride
  • As I Am Co Wash
  • Be Curly Co Wash

Natural, clean curly hair shampoos will contain natural sulfates and surfactants, typically derived from plants. These, however, may not cleanse as well.

Some natural surfactants are:

  • sarsaparilla
  • ivy agave
  • soap bark
  • soapwort

Avoid Water Insoluble Silicons For Curly Hair

There are two main types of silicones – water insoluble and water soluable. Both types of silicones are not a curly girl method approved ingredient.

To spot a silicone easily in a curly hair product’s ingredient list, look out for ingredients ending in “cone” or “zane”

Even though silicones are not curly girl method approved, they can play a very big role in making your curly and wavy hair look good!

A few of my favorite curly hair products contain silicone and I still use them from time to time and my results never disappoint.

Infact, your hair can benefit from silicones. If you use a curly hair product with silicones you will most likely experience:

  • Frizz control
  • Softness
  • Shine
  • Seals In moisture
  • Protects the hair from environment

However, silicones have a bad rep for hair care and styling because they are known to create a film over your hair strands and build up on your hair.

When this happens the argument is that you need harsh chemicals, like sulfates, to cleanse and clarify your hair and scalp.

Just as with sulfates, there are some silicones that are more harmful to your curly hair than other.

Water insoluble silicones can build up on your hair and scalp and because they aren’t soluble in water, harsh sulfates or sufactants will be needed to cleanse your hair properly.

Water insoluble or non-water soluble silicones to avoid in your curly hair products:

  • Dimethicone
  • Dimethiconol
  • Amodimethicone
  • Amodimethicon
  • Ceteraryl methicone
  • Pheryl trimethicone
  • Stearyl dimethicone

Curly Girl Friendly Water Soluable Silicones

Thankfully there are some water soluble silicones that are ok to use to style your curly and wavy hair.

Before I get into water soluable silicones, please note again that this type of silicones is still not curly girl method approved.

If you’re not intersted in following the curly girl method you may want to experiement with these silicones.

Silcones that are water soluable will break down in water and so, can prove to be the key to a great wash day.

Your hair can still benefit from these silicones and you can rest easy knowing that they can wash out pretty easily when you cleanse.

Water soluable silicones that are ok to use:

  • cyclomethicone
  • dimethicone copoyol
  • laurl methicone copolyol
  • PEG prefix before a silicone

Avoid Parabens For Curly Hair Products

Parabens are used as a preservative in hair and skin products to prevent the growth of bacteria.

However, parabens have been studied for years and there are many publications that suggest that they may cause adverse health effects. From hair and scalp damage to possible affecting hormones in your body.

In curly hair products you can easily spot a paraben as the ingredient will end in “paraben”.

Some examples of parabens in curly hair products

  • Butyl parabens
  • Ethyl parabens
  • Methyl parabens
  • Propylparabens

Waxes and Non Natural Oils To Avoid For Curly Hair

Waxes and non natural oils weigh down you hair and build up, making it hard to clarify and cleanse your scalp and hair without using sulfates.

Waxes and Oils to avoid in curly hair products

  • Bees wax
  • Candelilla wax
  • Petrolatum
  • Mineral Oils
  • Paraffinum liquidum

Drying Alcohols To Avoid For Curly Hair

Alcohols that dry out the hair are obviously bad for your curls and waves. They will make you hair dry and frizzy so, avoid them when choosing your curly girl products.

Drying alcohol ingredients to avoid:

  • Benzyl alcohol
  • Ethanol alcohol
  • Ethyl alcohol
  • Isopropyl alcohol (IPA)
  • Isopropanol alcohol
  • Propanol alcohol

However, not all alcohols are drying. Some fatty alcohols are actually hydrating as they add moisture to your hair.

Good Alcohols In Curly Hair Products:

  • Behenyl alcohol
  • Cetyl alcohol
  • Cetearyl alcohol
  • Lanolin alcohol
  • Lauryl alcohol
  • Myristyl alcohol
  • Stearyl alcohol

Curly Girl Method Ingredient Checkers

While it’s nice to know the exact ingredients to avoid for curly hair, most of us just don’t have the time or patience to study ingredient lists of products.

Thankfully, you don’t need to remember all of these specific ingredients as there are resources easily available to you to check curly hair products before you pruchase. Check out the websites and apps below.

How to easily find out if a product is curly girl method approved?

Curlscan is my current favorite (previously held by isitcg?), especially when I’m in a rush as all I have to do is enter the curly hair product and the result is whether it’s curly girl (CG) method approved or not. If I have time and I choose, I can then explore the ingredients.

Is it CG and curlsbot allow you to enter the curly hair product’s ingredients and then show results – whether it’s curly girl method approved or not.

Think dirty and EWG apps are both available for download on the App Store or on Google play. You can simply scan the products if you’re instore and get instant results.

I hope these lists of ingredients to avoid for curly hair has been helpful for you on your curly hair journey.

While it’s beneficial to know the specific ingredients to avoid in your curly hair products, if you simply don’t have the time or aren’t interested in knowing all of these hard to pronounce words (like me), try out the website or apps.

Hairitage Results On Wavy Hair

2a 2b 2c wavy hair results Hairitage Curl Cream - Clean curly girl approved curl cream

Using Heritiage Curl Cream on 2b 2c wavy hair provided great wash day results. A little goes a long way for wavy hair and even though it’s a thick cream, it didn’t weigh down these waves. The results were soft, moisturized bouncy waves.

Hairitage Results On Curly Hair

3a 3b curly hair results Hairitage Curl Cream - Clean curly girl approved curl cream

My 3a/3b curly hair loves Hairitage Curl Creme. I love the thickness of this cream as well as the slip it provides. The texture of the cream was incredibly easy to apply to my curls and styling was very quick and easy.

I used Eco Styler Argan Oil Gel for extra hold and I’m glad I did. I don’t think my results would last nearly as long if I don’t layer with a curly girl gel. It was also so easy to refresh as it’s activated by water. I simply spritzed my curls with water in the morning and gently scrunched.

After diffusing, my curls felt incredibly soft and moisturized.

Where To Buy Hairitage Curl Cream

Hairitage Curl Creme is so accessible. You can buy it here on Amazon or at your local Walmart or beauty supply store.

Hairitage Ahead of the Curl, Curl cream is now one of my favorite drugstore curl creams. It’s so affordable and gives my thirsty curls much needed moisture.

If you have tried this affordable curly girl approved cream, I’d love to hear your thoughts – let me know below!

step-by-step-how-to-squish-to-condish-curly-hair-2a-2b-2c-3a-3b-3c-hair-seaweed-hair

Step By Step – How To Squish To Condish Curly Hair

Step By Step – How To Squish To Condish Curly Hair

step by step how to squish to condish curly hair 2a 2b 2c 3a 3b 3c hair

This step by step squish to condish curly hair guide will help you to improve the hydration and health of your hair. So, whether you have wavy hair (2a, 2b, 2c hair) or curly hair (3a, 3b, 3c hair) you can benefit from this super easy curly girl technique.

What Is The Squish To Condish Method

Squish to condish is a method of deeply moisturizing your curly or wavy hair while you’re conditioning it.

This is done by applying a generous amount of conditioner to dripping wet hair and then scrunching or squishing them into your curls to encourage deeper penetration of your preferred curly girl conditioner.

3 benefits of Squish To Condish

  • intensifies hydration in curls and waves
  • reduces frizz
  • encourages maximum curl definition

Step By Step Squish To Condish

Here’s how to squish to condish

  1. Cleanse your hair with your preferred shampoo or co wash
  2. Rinse shampoo thoroughly from hair
  3. Apply conditioner generously to your dripping wet hair
  4. Detangle your hair
  5. Flip your head upside down
  6. Gently scrunching your curls from root to scalp
  7. Flip your head to the right side
  8. Gently scrunching your curls from root to scalp
  9. Flip your head to the left side
  10. Gently scrunching your curls from root to scalp
  11. Rinse throughly while gently scrunch your hair from root to scalp
step by step how to squish to condish curly hair 2a 2b 2c 3a 3b 3c hair
step by step how to squish to condish curly hair 2a 2b 2c 3a 3b 3c hair
step by step how to squish to condish curly hair 2a 2b 2c 3a 3b 3c hair

Key tips for success

  • Ensure that your hair is dripping wet
  • Apply enough conditioner so that your hair is very slippery and feels like seaweed
  • When you scrunch with the water and conditioner in your hair, you want to hear a squishing sound
  • Big defined curl clumps should form

How Long Does It Take

The length of time you take to complete this method on wash day depends on the health of your hair and your personal preference.

It may also take a few tries to figure out what works best for your hair.

However, for starters, you can rinse when excess water is no longer dripping out when you scrunch your curls.

Do You Rinse Your Hair After Squish To Condish

Always follow the directions on your curly girl conditioner. All conditioners will recommend thoroughly rinsing the product out of your hair.

Rinsing conditioner from your curls or waves is extremely important. Leaving conditioner in your hair can lead to an imbalance of moisture vs protein in your hair and cause hygral fatigue.

Squish To Condish With Leave In Conditioner

Instead, when you’re styling your hair you can scrunch your preferred curly girl leave in conditioner into your hair – following the steps outlined above.

This will allow you to benefit from the squish to condish technique with a product that is designed to stay in your hair.

Continue with your styling routine as usual.

What Do You Do After Squish To Condish

After rinsing, style your hair as usual. Try these posts if you’re looking for a curly hair routine or wavy hair routine.

I hope this post helps you get the curls or waves that you’ve been after. Let me know how it works out for you in the comments below.

Curly girl approved gels – the Eco Styler Gel Line – is one of the most affordable curly girl gels on the market and the results can mirror higher-end products when paired with the best curl cream for your hair.

This budget friendly curly girl method approved gel results in beautiful curls or waves that can last days after wash day. Read on for my full review and results on 2b wavy hair and 3b curly hair.

Is Eco Styler Gel Safe or Is It Bad?

Before we jump into my review of Eco Styler Gels, let’s take a look at the ingredients and what’s good about this curly girl approved gel.

Eco Style Gel Line has 13 types of hair gel for you to try:

  • Argan Oil
  • Gold
  • Black Castor & Flaxseed Oil
  • Coconut Oil
  • Colored Hair
  • Curl & Wave
  • Krystal
  • Olive Oil
  • Protein
  • Super Protein
  • Sport
  • KGF
  • Super Olive 10X

You can get any one very easily on Amazon.

Eco Styler Argan oil Ingredients

Water (Aqua), Carbomer Triethanolamine Argania Spinosa (Argan) Kernal Oil, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Glycerin, Polysorbate 20, Tetrasodium EDTA, PVP, Soldium Hydroxymethlglycinate, Fragrance, Yellow 5

The formula of this curly girl gel makes it a very affordable curly girl method approved gel.

Does Eco Styler Gel Make Your Hair Hard

Eco styler argan oil gel can provide very strong hold, depending on how much you apply to your curly or wavy hair. This means that your hair can feel quite hard after it has dried completely. However, to easily soften your curls or waves, simply scrunch out the crunch to reveal softer, bouncy ringlets.

I noticed a strong gel cast hold on 2b wavy hair but not on my 3a/3b curly hair. Maybe I needed to use more of the product.

How To Style With Eco Styler Argan Oil Gel

This gel works best when paired with your favourite curly girl hair cream for ultimate hold and long lasting results.

1. Wash & Condition your curls

Follow your normal wash day routine (see these posts for curly and wavy hair routines).

2. Apply Curl Cream

Curl CreamApply your preferred curly girl cream to your damp hair

3. Define your Curls

Define your curls using your preferred method (for instance, your Denman brush,Behairful brush, finger coiling).

4. Apply Eco Styler Gel

Scrunch some of the gel all over your hair to create a gel cast. Remember that as your hair dries, it will feel hard and stiff.

5. Diffuse or Air Dry

Dry your curls with your preferred method. Remember not to touch or manipulate your curls to reduce the chance of frizzing.

6. Scrunch out the crunch

Once your hair has completely dried, break the gel cast by taking a small amount of your favourite sealant oil and gently scrunch out the crunch.

Eco Styler Argan Oil Results 2b Wavy & 3b Curly Hair

I am in love with the results of this gel on 2b wavy hair. The gel created a strong gel cast to blow dry and scrunch out the crunch. The resulting waves are so soft and bouncy and gives the thin 2b wavy hair some much needed body!

Eco Styler Argan Oil Gel Results 2b Wavy Hair- Wet
Eco Styler Argan Oil Gel Results 2b Wavy Hair- Dry

For my 3a/3b curly hair, the results were okay. I’ve definitely had better results with products like Cantu’s Curl Activating Cream. For this wash day, I paired the eco gel with the Dippity Do Girls With Curls Curl Cream. I got a decent gel cast but I didn’t love the curl definition and I had quite a bit of frizz.

Final Thoughts On This Curly Girl Approved Gel

The Eco Styler Gel Line is a great affordable, curly girl-approved gel and I use it occasionally but not often. I get a much stronger gel cast and hold when I use some other favorites like the Dippity do Girls with Curls Gelee or even with Cantu’s Curl Activator Cream.

Easy Bandana & Scarf Hairstyles For Curly & Wavy

Easy Bandana & Scarf Hairstyles For Curly & Wavy

bandana hairstyles for curly, wavy or straight hair

Bandana hairstyles or scarf hairstyles are perfect for curly and wavy hair to complete your chic, laidback look. Scarf or Bandana headbands and hairstyles are also the perfect addition to your hairstyle for spring and summer to add a fun pop of color and won’t damage your hair.

Are Bandanas & Scarfs Still In Style In 2021?

Before we jump into some super cute bandana hairstyles for your wavy, curly or straight hair, let’s answer an important question! Are bananas even still in style in 2021?

I’m very happy to report that bandanas are still very hot and trendy and this style isn’t going anywhere, anytime soon.

Ways to Style Your Hair With A Scarf Or Bandana

  1. Bandana Headband
  2. Braid
  3. Ponytail
  4. Bun
  5. Pineapple
5 super easy Scarf & bandana hairstyles for curly and wavy hair

Bandana Headband Styles

Let’s start with a super easy bandana hairstyle – styling with it as a headband. So, how do you style a bandana headband on your wavy, curly or straight hair? To style:

  1. Fold your bandana to form a triangle
  2. then keep folding diagonally until you have a one inch (or wider) band.
  3. Holding the ends of the bandana, place your bandana headband in a comfortale position at the top of your head.
  4. Tie the ends of the bandana at the base of your head.
  5. Finally, adjust any strands around the frame of your face to soften your look.

Bandana Headband Hairstyles are also perfect for short hair of any texture (straight, curly or wavy).

This bandana headband still is so easy and will keep your hair back so that you can show your gorgeous face. You’ll also add some fun color to your hairstyle.

Scarf Or Bandana Pony Tail Hairstyle

A high, middle, low, or half ponytail is an awesome bandana hairstyle for your straight, wavy, or curly hair. This bandana hairstyle works best with a smaller bandana so it doesn’t overpower your hairstyle. To style:

  1. Secure your preferred pony tail with a hairtie
  2. Fold the bandana in a triangle
  3. Keep folding diagonally until you make a strip
  4. Wrap the bandana around the pony tail and secure it with a hair pin

Bandana Or Scarf Plait Or Braid For Wavy, Curly Hair

A braided or plait hairstyle with a scarf or bandana will add color all through your plait or braid. To style:

  1. Make a triangle with your scarf or bandana
  2. Fold your bandana to your preferred width
  3. Put your hair in a pony tail
  4. Wrap the scarf around your pony tail
  5. Create two equal sections for your braid
  6. Start braiding your hair with the two sections and the scarf as the third section of your braid or plait
  7. Braid as usual incorporating the scarf or banada with sections of your braid (one section will be without piece of the scarf or bandana)
  8. Secure your braid with an elastic

Alternatively, in step 5, you can create three equal sections of your hair. Next, hold the middle of your scarf and place it on top of your ponytail and incorporate one half of the scarf with one section of your plait and the other with another section of your plait. Note that one section of your hair will not have part of the scarf. Plait or braid your hair as usual.

Scarf Or Bandana Bun Hairstyle

The super easy style is, of course, my favourite. I love putting my curly hair in a bun. Adding a scarf or bandana adds a pop of colour and makes my bun even cuter. The easiest way to do this style is to create a bun and simply wrap your scarf around your bun and secure the ends under or tie the bandana or scarf in a knot or bow to secure. And that’s literally it!

Curly Pineapple With Scarf Or bandana

This hairstyle is super cute for the day and protective when sleeping with your curly or wavy hair.

To style your curly or wavy hair in a pineapple with a scarf or bandana:

  1. Fold your scarf in a triangle
  2. Bend your head over and place the long part of the scarf at the base of your neck (so that the pointy part is at the top of your head)
  3. Next, criss cross by your forehead
  4. Then, wrap again to the back of your head and secure with a knot or bow

There are many other ways that you can style your curly hair or wavy hair with a scarf or bandana but these 5 are my faves because they’re so easy and very cute.

I hope you try these hairstyles and fall in love with the looks. Let me know in the comments below 🙂

This hair type is usually fine and has a delicate texture, making it prone to frizz and losing definition.

This hair type typically has a medium texture, with the waves being more pronounced than 2a hair.

It can be prone to frizz, especially in humid conditions, and may require extra care to maintain definition and bounce.

2c Hair Type

This hair type tends to have more volume and is the thickest among the wavy hair types.

These are my current favorite recommendations for type 2 hair and are all worth a try if you have wavy hair.

Remember, though, having naturally textured hair means that you have to experiement with different products and techniques to find what works best for you.

For wavy hair, always look for light weight products and always start with a small amount of product when styling.

This is especially true if you have fine, wavy hair – if you use too much product, it can weigh your hair down and you may end up disliking a great product that could have given you amazing results if you used less.

I’d love to hear from you! Let me know if you’ve tried any of these products for wavy hair and how they worked for you.

Also, if you have a favorite curly girl product that’s not on this list, let me know so that I can check it out and add it to this list!
