The Best Tips To Fall Asleep Fast – You Need Now

How To Fall Asleep Fast – Sleep Tips For Kids & Parents

how to get kids to fall asleep fast. how to fall asleep fast

Over the years, I have learned a few tricks to successfully get my kids to fall asleep fast. The best part is that all my tricks work for my husband and me too!

Our biggest struggle at naptime and bedtime used to be to get our kids to fall asleep quickly. Through research and trial and error, I’ve cracked the code and here I’ll share the best tips on how to make your child fall asleep fast. These sleep tips and tricks also work wonders for parents too – so don’t worry moms, I’ve got you!

How much sleep do We need?

Let’s start off with understanding how much sleep we need. The amount of sleep we need varies at each stage in our lives. As we grow – from baby to adult, the number of hours of sleep needed decreases but should not be less than 7 hours. Sleep Foundation provides the following recommendations of sleep ranges:

Newborns (0-3 months): Sleep range narrowed to 14-17 hours each day (previously it was 12-18)

Infants (4-11 months): Sleep range widened two hours to 12-15 hours (previously it was 14-15)

Toddlers (1-2 years): Sleep range widened by one hour to 11-14 hours (previously it was 12-14)

Preschoolers (3-5): Sleep range widened by one hour to 10-13 hours (previously it was 11-13)

School age children (6-13): Sleep range widened by one hour to 9-11 hours (previously it was 10-11)

Teenagers (14-17): Sleep range widened by one hour to 8-10 hours (previously it was 8.5-9.5)

Younger adults (18-25): Sleep range is 7-9 hours (new age category)

Adults (26-64): Sleep range did not change and remains 7-9 hours

Older adults (65+): Sleep range is 7-8 hours (new age category)

Sleep Foundation

It’s true that more sleep doesn’t automatically mean you feel refreshed the following day but it can help with getting you there. For instance, you’re far more likely to get more quality sleep if you sleep for 8 hours than if you sleep for 3 hours.

Why is Quality sleep Important For Kids & Parents

The quality of sleep is arguably more important than the quantity. The quality of your sleep determines how rested you feel.

I’ve known people who have slept for 10 hours and still feel tired. On the other hand, I know of people who get 6 hours of sleep on average and feel well-rested and energetic.

Sleep helps us to reenergize, heal, increase brain memory function, and make us more productive.

When we lack quality sleep our concentration, attention, problem-solving skills and our mood suffer at an alarming rate.

WebMD has a great article outlining some of the effects of sleep loss.

When I don’t get enough sleep my brain function definitely suffers. I forget things, I’m short tempered and of course, I’m dragging. If I feel like this I totally get the tantrums from the kids when they don’t get enough quality sleep.

According to parents.com, there are two different types of sleep: NON REM and REM (Rapid Eye Movement).

Non Rem sleep consists of five stages of sleep with deep sleep (stages 3 & 4) being the most important as it’s the healing stage and helps to restore us.

REM sleep is where we dream, sort memories and optimize memory function.

Interestingly, the article goes on to say that deep sleep tends to take place during the first third of the night, and REM sleep seems to take place closer to morning time.

What does all of this tell us? As moms, we’re probably not getting enough deep sleep. The key, therefore, lies in preventing and limiting restlessness and learning to fall asleep quickly and deeply.

HOW TO GET YOUR KIDS TO FALL ASLEEP FAST

8 tips To Help Your Kids (And You) Fall Asleep Fast & Get Better quality sleep

Learning how to fall asleep fast as a kid has is key to overall health and development. The following tips get my kids to fall asleep in no time and it’s so simple! Once you get your child into a good bedtime routine, everyone’s going to have better sleeps and better days. Remember, these tips also work wonders for you too, so be sure to try them out!

1. The breathing technique that Helps your Kids Fall Asleep fast

Deep breathing is at the top of my sleep tips because it makes my kids fall asleep faster. It’s the best and most important tip to get anybody to fall asleep fast!

For new moms, deep breathing is particularly important for those late-night nursing sessions. After I put my baby down, I used to read on my phone to try to get sleepy but somehow an hour passes and I’m still scrolling.

Thankfully I came across the 4-7-8 method by Dr. Weil. This deep breathing exercise is a natural tranquilizer for the nervous system. In a nutshell, you take a 4-second breath through your nose, hold the breath for 7 seconds then release through your mouth slowly for an 8-second count. Dr. Weil recommends to only do this for four cycles initially and increase once you’re more familiar.

In the beginning, I could not hold my breath for that long and so I started off with the same principle but just a shortened version. Once I practiced it, this works every time for me.

This method is also great because your child learns how to fall asleep fast as a kid. I started it with my kids when they were young. It encourages them to purposefully calm their minds and relax. At first, my second son was somewhat resistant to trying this deep breathing technique but my firstborn and I did the breaths with him and he eventually got into it. Now, my kids are pros and they do it without prompting. They’re really proud that they learned how to fall asleep fast as a kid and are eager to teach their baby sister when she gets older.

2. Optimize the temperature of your sleep environment

The temperature of your kids’ bedrooms and your bedroom helps to create a comfortable environment to fall asleep quickly. If the sleep environment is too hot or too cold it would be challenging to get to sleep.

As we sleep our internal body temperature rises and this can cause discomfort if the room is too warm. The use of fans and air conditioning can help in warmer weather and heat can help in colder weather.

It’s worth it to test out different temperatures to find what’s comfortable for each member of your family.

3. Create a dark sleep environment To Help Your Child Sleep Faster

Light signals to our brains that it’s time to be awake. Therefore, reducing light signals to our brain that it’s time to sleep and stay asleep.

Waking up with the natural light is awesome if you are getting enough quality sleep. Otherwise, blackout curtains are essential.

This is really helpful for our kids’ nap time routines and getting them to sleep quickly. This dark environment also helps them to sleep in on mornings instead of getting up once it’s bright outside.

4. Say goodnight to Electronic devices To Get Kids To Fall Asleep Fast

Blue light messes with our brains – it tricks our minds into thinking it’s daytime and this reduces melatonin (a hormone that induces sleep) and signals to the brain that it’s time to be awake.

While there are now settings and apps to reduce blue light exposure, I’ve found that putting down the phone and other electronics before bedtime helps us get to sleep faster. It also goes a long way to improve the quality of our sleep.

Especially for our kids, we have a no electronics rule after dinner. This rule not only helps our kids fall asleep faster but we have also found that they wake up the next morning in much better moods and with higher energy levels.

Instead, before bed, we do things to help us relax and wind down. We read books, sing nursery rhymes, and let the kids tell us stories. Snuggling and reading with our kids also put us into sleep mode. If you need a little more reading time, after the kids are in bed, you can also use the opportunity to get some much-needed adult time and read a new book.

5. White noise is not just for babies!

Yes! White noise is not just for babies, it has worked wonders for our kids and for us too.

White noise works so well for our family in two main ways. Firstly, it helps us get in a relaxed state to drift off to sleep easier. This, together with the deep breathing technique is how our kids get to sleep faster.

Secondly, once asleep, white noise helps us stay asleep by blocking out interruptions that may disturb our sleep and wake us.

6. Have a relaxing nighttime routine for Everyone

A simple self care night time routine can do wonders to help you fall asleep faster and to improve your sleep quality.

For me, a warm shower and self-massaging my feet, hands, and head relax me enough before bed. I also love doing stretches before bed as it relaxes me to the point where the 4-7-8 breathing technique works even faster.

For the kids, sometimes while they read, we give their little feet massages or give them head rubs.

7. Avoid Sugar & Caffeine before bedtime

I’m sure we’re all too familiar with the sugar rush kids experience. To avoid any chance of a sugar rush before bed, we try to limit food with sugar before bed.

Moms and dads should also avoid caffeine before bedtime. I don’t drink coffee (gasp, I know!). So, for this sleep tip, I’ve relied on experiences from other moms.

Caffeine is beneficial when we need a burst of energy, which is why it’s effective for mornings. When you think of how that cup of coffee allows you to feel on a morning, it’s no surprise that it’s probably not the best idea to have it before bed.

Keep in mind that while we may still get to sleep, the quality of sleep may negatively be affected.

8. Go back to sleep, if you can!

This final sleep tip sets the tone for the day and the next sleep time. It is crucial in helping kids fall asleep later on, at nap time and night time.

I’ve experienced a child waking up too soon enough times to know that this is super important. If they get up too early, they’re cranky and moody during the day and nap times tend to be challenging. In turn, helping my kids get to sleep at bedtime can prove to be more difficult than usual.

So, if my kids wake up too early, I always encourage them to go back to bed. Sometimes, I let them finish sleeping in our bed but most times, I take them back to their beds and tuck them in. Sometimes I stay with them and we do the deep breaths until they drift off but most times, they’re really still sleepy and so they go back to sleep on their own.

As a mom, of course this is a struggle for me, like many other moms. Whether it’s because our kids wake us up before we are ready to get up or because we think we can get more done by getting up before everyone else.

My third baby liked to sleep in on mornings and I was trying to capitalize on that by waking up earlier (sometimes forcing myself) and getting a headstart on chores or work. I soon realized that I couldn’t keep up. I was cranky and tired.

Instead, when I wake up earlier than I should, I keep my eyes closed and do the deep breathing exercises. I fall back to sleep in no time.

This may not be an option during the week, but on weekends you can definitely try it if your kids would allow. Or try switching with hubby – you take Saturdays and he takes Sundays to sleep in.

HOW to fall asleep fast

Learning how to get your kids to fall asleep fast is gold as a parent and it’s also essential for you to learn how to fall asleep fast. I hope these tips mean the end of frustrating nights and nap time with getting your kids to sleep. I also hope it means no more tossing and turning or scrolling for you!

Happy sleeping 🙂

Sixth Month Blog Report

Curly Bun Mom is six months old and I made my first $4.06. Yayyyy! In this sixth month blog report, I’m going to be sharing how I made my first bit of money blogging and the change in my growth strategy and the results.

Before continuing, catch up with my first month, second month, third month, fourth month and fifth month of blogging 🙂

how i made my first dollar - $4.06 blogging with my mom blog

So, How Did i make my First $4.06?

This is pretty funny – after I first wrote this post, I actually went to my Amazon Affiliate account to see how much longer I had before they kick me out (if you don’t make a sale within a certain amount of time, they let you go).

To my surprise, I had made a few sales from these posts: Curly Hair Basics For Busy Moms, 10 Newborn Must Haves To Make The Newborn Stage Easier, 9 Breastfeeding And Pumping Essentials.

I didn’t even know that I made money from my mom blog!

I made my first $4.06 from Amazon Affiliate Sales.

When I found out, of course, I had to come back and add in this awesomeness 🙂 My promotion strategy for these posts (and all my posts) has been solely through my Pinterest account (more in the Pinterest section below).

What is my current growth strategy?

In June, I didn’t participate in any facebook traffic share threads and so, as expected I saw a steep decline in pageviews. However, I’m so excited that my hard work with Pinterest paid off and my Pinterest account soared! For the first time, traffic was coming in consistently WITHOUT Facebook traffic share threads. These were real people from all over the world who visited my blog because they were interested in what I had to say! I know it’s a little corny but, this is, hands down the MOST exciting and rewarding aspect of blogging.

It’s so amazing to see what content is truly resonating with my readers. I have to admit here that I have been taken aback and even a little stumped with the content that’s doing really well – I definitely didn’t think the topic would have been a hit, as I thought it was super saturated. The insight I’ve gained from tracking my popular posts are truly invaluable.

Sixth Month Performance Review

As you would remember from last month, I’ve stopped setting numerical goals for my blog. Instead, I’ll be focusing on return on investment (my time) and growth.

6 month mom blog traffic report. Newbie blog report review

Pageviews

  • Pageviews : 4652
  • Sessions : 1530

Even though my pageviews have declined, I’m actually super excited about what that number means! It means that Curly Bun Mom was authentically viewed 4,652 times! How could I possibly be sad about that?

This month, I started tracking real-time views in Google Analytics, when I published a pin on Pinterest. It was pretty awesome. Especially for the kids. They get so excited when they see the number currently on my blog and the LOVE to check out the locations of the views. It has certainly turned into cute little family moments.

I’m hoping as I grow on Pinterest and hopefully start ranking more on Google, my traffic will increase bit by bit.

In July, I’m going to focus even less on the number of pageviews and use the insights from Google Analytics to write more content for my audience.

Google Ranking

I’m currently still ranking at #1 for eight of my posts and a few others are on the first page of Google.

When I started my blog, I dreamed of the day I would have just one post ranking at #1! By my fifth month, I have had eight!

I’m currently ranking first on Google for these posts:

#1 google search result for never too late to learn to love yourself - curly bun mom
Curly Bun Mom – #1 result for “Never Too Late to Learn to Love Yourself
Curly Bun Mom #1 result for “Becoming a SAHM MBA wasted?”
Curly Bun Mom Google Snippet for Curly Hair Basics for Moms

Pinterest Performance review

Quick look at overall stats:

  • Followers: 418 – 520
  • Unique monthly viewers: 116K – 281K (139% INCREASE)
  • Impressions: 147k – 343k
  • Engaged Audience: 2.89 – 5.91k (104% INCREASE)

My goals for June was to upload five new pins every day. This totally paid off!

I haven’t purchased many courses because I’m not making any money as yet. But, I definitely lucked out by getting Ell’s Pinterest course and Carly’s Pinteresting Strategies.

Ell’s Pinterest course, Pinterest With Ell is SUPER affordable and she also has a Facebook group where you can ask her anything and get a timely response. It’s amazing!

Ell’s course is easy to understand and she has a private Facebook group for anybody who has taken her course. This is so helpful as I was able to not only clarify my Pinterest strategy, but I also gain a lot of insights from her and other members in the group.

Next up is Carly’s Pinterest course – Pinteresting Strategies. Carly has been an inspiration of mine before I even started blogging. When I was searching for a blog name, funny enough, one of the names I checked for was “mommy on purpose”, LOL. That’s how I found Carly.

Then when I was getting into blogging and more specifically, Pinterest. I really didn’t want to put out the money for Tailwind and so, I came across Pinteresting Strategies and Carly once again.

Her Pinterest strategy is basically manual – right up my alley!

Even though at the time her course was aimed at bloggers who were a bit more established, I still bought her course with plans to implement her strategy once I had more posts to share.

This was probably THE BEST investment. Her course was updated recently with all the Pinterest changes and she breaks. it. down!

In her course and online videos, she eliminates all the confusion and is very clear with everything Pinterest related. She has a Facebook group that is extremely helpful AND from time to time she does live to explain and quell Pinterest confusion.

She even showed how her traffic tanked and how she able to get it back on track. This was really useful to me and her course helped me clean up my Pinterest account since I stopped with the Facebook threads.

So now, with the knowledge I’ve gained from those two courses, Pinterest With Ell and Pinteresting Strategies coupled with trial and error, I have a decent Pinterest Strategy. It has worked really well for me in June and will hopefully continue to work well in July.

Overall Goals for July 2020

For July, I’m going to continue with my Pinterest Strategy and start back writing blog content. I also hope to offer a couple of freebies, so sign up and stay tuned 🙂

Unrelated to blogging, this summer, I’m going to be baking and spending lots more time playing with the kiddos!

I hope this has helped to get a good idea of what a fifth month blog traffic report can look like.. I’d love to hear from you! – What was your experience in your fifth month?

10 Must Haves To Make The Newborn Stage Even Better

10 Must Haves To Make The Newborn Stage Even Better

newborn, baby, feet

I’m by no means a baby expert but as a mom of three kids, I felt compelled to share my newborn must-haves. I wanted to take this opportunity to share the products that worked best for us with making the newborn phase a little easier.

Having had three babies, I’ve had a lot of suggestions thrown at me about what I needed each time. I’ve also done research, read many “newborns must-have” blogs and looked at a lot of vlogs.

I’ve used the same or similar products for all my babies and for each I’ve found something that worked for one that didn’t work for the others. For instance, with my first two, they loved being swaddled with their arms down and used the same type of swaddle. However, my third did not like it one bit and I found the most ingenious swaddle.

10 Newborn Products New Moms Must-Have

10 newborn essentials every new mom must have to make the newborn stage easier and more enjoyable

This isn’t a necessities list – so you won’t see things like pampers, wipes or vaseline. It’s a list of my essential recommendations to make the newborn stage of life more enjoyable for baby and parents. Let’s dive in!

Aden & Anais Swaddle Blankets

Hands down, these are the absolute best blankets ever! These are made from muslin material and are so soft and breathable. The super adorable prints are a cute added bonus.

One of the best things about these swaddles is that they are multipurpose and can be used as a blanket (from newborn to toddler), swaddle, nursing cover and stroller cover – just to mention a few.

These swaddle blankets are incredibly durable. I got these for each baby and they use it daily – my eldest is six years old and these blankets are still incredibly soft and have held up really well.

Aden & Anais Washcloths

These washcloths have similar features for the Aden & Anais blankets. They are so absorbent, soft and versatile.

These were my go-to for breastfeeding and bath time. They’re sized just right – not too big and not too small.

Just as with the swaddle blankets, six years later and we’re still using them – a testament to its quality, durability, and washability.

Munchkin Clean Cradle Tub

This bathtub was a super exciting find for me. With my sons, I used the more traditional bath tubs and I found it incredibly difficult to handle them as newborns, in the bath on my own. Bath time was filled with anxiety and I dreaded it. I usually preferred to wait for my husband to get home to bathe them.

When I was pregnant with my daughter (third baby) I was searching for an easier product and came across this Munchkin Tub. There was another brand that was similar and actually more popular but what sold me on this one was the water outlet at the front.

I placed it on my countertop and baby bath time was so easy compared with my boys. I no longer dreaded bath time and had no anxiety!

The bathtub is made with soft, non slip material which keeps baby safe and comfortable for bath time. My daughter never fussed and really enjoyed bath time. She actually used to cry when it was over!

Clean up and storage was also a breeze with this tub. It’s easy to clean and dries really quickly.

Leachco Cuddle-U Basic Nursing Pillow

A good nursing pillow that is durable and comfortable for mom, dads, baby, and siblings! I used the same nursing pillow for all three kids and it was still in such good condition that I was able to donate it to a friend who just had her first baby.

I’ve tried other brands but this was the perfect size and thickness for me.

This nursing pillow doubles as a baby lounger and to start baby with tummy time. As your baby grows you can also use the pillow as sit up support.

The one downfall is that it doesn’t come with a slipcover and must be spot cleaned. I was VERY fortunate not to have had an accident while using the pillow but with babies the probability of a messy accident is pretty high. I also mainly used the pillow as a nursing pillow and so I purchased a slip cover that fit really well.

Minky Nursing Pillow Cover

Nurse in style and comfort with this Minky nursing pillow slip cover. It is made of the softest, most comfortable fabric that won’t irritate your baby’s sensitive newborn skin.

It’s also super easy to remove, wash and slip back on making maintenance quick and simple!

HALO Bassinest Swivel Sleeper

This bassinet is a c section mama’s dream! I didn’t have it with my first and it was the best purchase I made when I had my second.

The features are amazing!

  • Easy height adjustment
  • 360 rotation
  • Swivels – to bring baby closer to you or to gently move it away for you to get out of the bed.
  • Mesh material makes it easy to see baby and great ventilation
  • Front of the bassinet lowers for easier pick ups and put downs
  • Two very convenient storage pockets for baby necessities
  • Nightlight, vibrations, soothing sounds

The downfall is the price considering the length of time the baby can use it – it’s recommended up to 5 months. However, if you expect to have more kids or can pass it on to your siblings for when they’re having kids, it’s a great investment.

MyBaby Sound Spa| 6 soothing lullabies for newborns

We owned a few sound machines until we finally found “the one”. We tried a few projector and sound machine in one products and they were pretty bad buys.

This machine was smaller than the ones we previously purchasesd, it was affordable, simple, robust and effective. It comes with 6 different sounds:

  • Heartbeat
  • White noise
  • Ocean
  • Summer night
  • Cradle
  • brook

There’s also a built-in auto timer that can be set for 15, 30 or 60 minutes.

It can be used with a wall charger or 4 AA batteries, making it an easy choice on the go.

Love To Dream Swaddle UP

I found this swaddle when I was pregnant with my third baby but having used another swaddle successfully with my first two babies, I decided to hold off on buying it.

Within two months I realized it was the perfect choice for my daughter. Unlike her brothers who preferred their hands down when they were swaddled, she wanted her hands up and she was able to self soothe.

She went from waking up every hour to sleeping for four to five hours straight! She eventually slept for 8-10 hours straight at night in the swaddle.

When she started rolling over from belly to back, I was pretty sad that we had to stop using it. We had a bit of an adjustment period – she reverted to five hours being her longest stretch of sleep but it honestly didn’t take too long for her to get back to sleeping eight hours plus at night.

Fisher-Price My Little Snugabunny Cradle ‘n Swing

This was a lifesaver when hubby went back to work and I was home alone and healing post c section.

The movement, sound, and incredibly soft material made for an ideal cozy environment for baby to nap or play.

The 16 soothing songs, hanging toys and the domed mirror entertained my newborn while I got a much-needed rest or grabbed a meal.

Baby Daybook Tracking app

This was my best friend! Between recovering from giving birth, the lack of sleep and exhaustion from being a new mom, we forget! This app or any phone app is a must!

It helped me with sleep and eating patterns.

It also helped me when I wanted to start potty training my 7-month-old.

There’s also a growth tracker to easily see your baby’s growth pattern & percentile.

10 newborn essentials every new mom must have to make the newborn stage easier and more enjoyable

Final Suggestions on Newborn Must Haves

Not every item will benefit every mom, family or baby in the same way. It’s a great idea to do as much research as you can before making your decisions. A great rule of thumb when buying a wishlist item is to ensure that you can either pass it down to future siblings or cousins or that you can sell it later on.

Let me know what products you have used to get through the newborn phase easier.

How To Beat Breastfeeding Exhaustion

How To Beat Breastfeeding Exhaustion

How To Beat Breastfeeding Exhaustion

breastfeeding exhaustion

Breastfeeding exhaustion is brutal and sadly, overlooked!

Last night I had a dream that I was pregnant for the fourth time and I panicked! Don’t get me wrong. I LOVE babies – I’m always joking that I’d have a soccer team of kids if I could.

But, in my dream, seeing the positive pregnancy test, made me feel exhausted. I still vividly remember my exhaustion after my daughter was born.

I remember how tiring it was recovering post c section and not getting enough sleep. How tiring it was when I was awake and breastfeeding while everybody else got to sleep.

Even when I started to get more sleep, I still felt tired primarily because of exhaustion caused by breastfeeding and pumping. There were days when my babies were going through growth spurts and it felt like all I did was nurse them. It felt like my existence was purely to feed my baby.

I read of other moms’ breastfeeding experiences and even my friends’ experiences who described breastfeeding to be magical, emotional, and special.

Yes, I felt all those too eventually (read my story here) but at first, I didn’t feel the bond and I was just.so.exhausted!

I really dislike feeling so lethargic so I set out to beat the breastfeeding exhaustion and regain some semblance of my normally energetic self. I made some much needed changes with my diet and self care routines and was able to feel pretty amazing.

In the end, I ended up loving and enjoying my breastfeeding experience with my daughter.

Why does breastfeeding make you so tired

If you just think of what breastfeeding is, it’s understandable that breastfeeding moms would feel tired. It’s hard work!

Of course, it’s invisible work and so you and your partner may not immediately think that it could have such a draining effect on your body.

Your body works overtime to make nutrients for your baby and so, breastfeeding requires more energy from you.

Breastfeeding also means that for the first few weeks at least, you’re on demand, around the clock. That alone is cause for extreme exhaustion.

And, as if breastfeeding one baby is not exhausting enough, when you have other kids, a job and a house to look after, it’s almost miraculous that moms are functioning at all.

How much energy do you need while breastfeeding to Fight Exhaustion

According to Kellymom.com “Per Breastfeeding and Human Lactation (Riordan, 2004, p. 438), “The amount of energy needed by lactating mothers continues to be debated. The lactating mother need not maintain a markedly higher caloric intake than that maintained prior to pregnancy: in most cases, 400-500 calories in excess of that which is needed to maintain the mother’s body weight is sufficient.”

Why does breastfeeding make You sleepy

The hormones prolactin and oxytocin play important roles during and after pregnancy.

NCIB (National Center for Biotechnology Information) breaks down their roles. For breastfeeding, “Prolactin and oxytocin are released in response to stimulation by the baby’s sucking at the breast. Prolactin is responsible for milk production, and oxytocin for milk letdown. However, these hormones are beneficial in other ways. Prolactin is sometimes called “the love hormone.” In animals, it is responsible for mothering behaviors. Oxytocin is responsible for the relaxed, sometimes sleepy, calm feelings that accompany milk letdown. Together, these two hormones keep mothers relaxed, calm, and ready to care for their babies (Uvnas-Moberg, 2003). In a very real sense, the birth of a baby is also the birth of a mother—the birth of a breastfeeding baby and mother.

This is gold for night time nursing. It definitely helps mom to drift off to sleep easier.

4 easy tips to Beat breastfeeding Exhaustion

Now on to the good stuff! How do we beat breastfeeding exhaustion and get back some MUCH NEEDED energy? And perhaps, more importantly, can this be done in a simple way? The very last thing a new mom needs at this point is more work or something extra to remember.

With this in mind, I listened to my body and did some light research. Thankfully, I was able to simplify things so that I didn’t add too much to my plate and I was able to fully benefit from following these 4 tips.

1. Exercise

Ahhhh, of course, this had to be a critical aspect of overcoming my breastfeeding fatigue! I have such an epic love-hate relationship with exercise. I know it’s so good for me but ahh man! sometimes I just want to curl up on the couch. But of course, when I pump myself up and get it done – I feel AH-MAZING.

You might be like me, and this is the very last thing you want to do right now. But, I promise you, it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself and by extension, for your family. Even in it’s simplest form, exercise will do your body and mind wonders.

Once you get clearance from your doctor, start with light exercises such as walking then work your way up. You will find that your energy levels improve and your body transformation will be an added benefit.

2. Drink more water

I cannot stress this enough (in fact, I think I will dedicate a post to the incredible benefits of water). Water is one of the most important requirements for all of us because of it’s hydrating and other health benefits. For breastfeeding moms, in particular, though, it’s super important as we need it for healthy milk production.

Each time I started nursing, I remember feeling extremely hot and thirsty. All I wanted was ice cold water.

It honestly almost felt like my body was exaggerating and I was making up how I was feeling lol. That is, until it continued happening. Of course, there was a logical and scientific reason I got those feelings and I wasn’t making it up or crazy lol

Very Well Family explained it quite simply – “The release of oxytocin while you’re breastfeeding can raise your body temperature so you may feel hot while you’re nursing. It might also make you feel thirsty.”

3. Maintain a well balanced diet

When you’re breastfeeding, it’s arguably even more important to prioritize eating a balanced well diet because there’s so much going on that it’s easy to prioritize a lot of other things.

You have to take in enough nutrients for two people – you and your baby. A diet that excludes all processed foods and one that is low in processed sugar, will ensure that you get a much-needed energy boost.

There are still food restrictions for breastfeeding moms and your health care provider can provide the necessary resources and guidelines for you.

4. Prioritize and practice Self Care

This was the hardest part for me. I tend to push myself past my limits and I always pay the price. I push so far that I eventually end up sick or just so tired that my body aches. Don’t do this.

Listen to your body, take breaks, and know that this isn’t selfish. Needing time off and asking for help also does not make you weak. This had become (and still is) my daily mantra.

Practicing self care has limitless benefits and even the busiest moms can find time to ensure they pamper and rejuvenate themselves.

In our case, we didn’t have much of a support system other than each other and so I kept pushing myself because I knew if I didn’t do it then it would all fall on my husband.

It was counterproductive though, because if I ended up getting sick then it would still have fallen on him! So in essence, my approach made no sense.

Instead, we started checking in with one another more and trying to find ways of supporting one another.

My best advice is to be gentle with yourself.

Take away

Being aware and realistic with your personal circumstances and the level of your exhaustion is key to overcoming or reducing it.

I made the mistake of going down the rabbit hole of comparing my circumstances and experiences with other moms and all it got me was frustrated and depressed.

It was easier for me to feel like there was something wrong with me and I was a bad mom for not loving it and bonding with my kids in the exact same way I had read. I felt like a slave to breastfeeding and still, I pushed myself more when I should have slowed down. But, I did what I felt was best for my babies and I truly have no regrets because that was my main intention.

So, for moms who are new to breastfeeding – I want you to know that it can be very EXHAUSTING. But! It’s for a time and it really is one of the best experiences. Using the tips in this post will definitely help you regain some energy so that you feel less lethargic.

One day your baby will stop breastfeeding and maybe you’ll miss it, maybe you won’t. I didn’t miss it with my first two babies, but I think I’ll miss it with my daughter. I was able to form a bond with her while breastfeeding that I wasn’t able to with my other kids because, with her, I prioritized reducing my oversupply of breastmilk and overcoming breastfeeding exhaustion.

At the end of it all, once you do what is best for you and your baby, that’s all that matters.

I’d love to hear your breastfeeding experience in the comments below.

Breastfeeding & Pumping Essentials To Make Newborn Life Easier

9 Breastfeeding and Pumping Essentials To Make Mom Life Easier

9 Breastfeeding and pumping Essentials To Make Mom life Easier

breastfeeding, newborn, baby

As a first time mom, I found myself completely unprepared for breastfeeding and to a larger extent for pumping.

I had spent so much time and energy on trying to conceive that once I was pregnant, I focused on every moment of my pregnancy that I never bothered to educate myself on breastfeeding or pumping. BIG mistake! The only knowledge I had was that “breast is best” for both baby and mama.

At the hospital, when I breastfed my first born, it felt very natural and I had no issues. I don’t know if it was the adrenaline or the pain meds, or maybe a combination, but it felt like a walk in the park.

Unfortunately, things were different when I got home. All I felt was pain in both breasts. It was unreal, excruciating, and uncomfortable.

From the painful latch, to engorgement, to oversupply, plugged ducts and mastitis, I felt so overwhelmed with pain.

The only thing that kept me going was seeing how content my baby boy was when he was nursing. I held on to that and persisted.

Essentials to Make Breastfeeding & Pumping Easier

9 essential breastfeeding and pumping must haves

Thankfully, as time went by, I researched and found the best products to make nursing and pumping so much easier!

There’s little in this world that can compare with bonding with your baby while nursing.

My advice to any nursing or pumping mom is to ensure that you give yourself the best chance to bond easily with your newborn and baby by having the right products.

These 9 breastfeeding and pumping esssentials made nursing and pumping so much easier and more enjoyable for my babies and for me .

Medela breast pump

I used a few breast pumps with my first son and nothing was better than the Medela breast pump. I never looked back and never felt like I needed to look for another pump. It was the most efficient and most comfortable. The flange options are amazing as most of the other pumps weren’t able to fit me as well and it made pumping more painful and less efficient (I actually got less milk – which meant that my breasts weren’t being drained which it needed to be as I had an issue with mastitis.)

The Medela pump was hands down! I used it to pump for all three kids, including when I went back to work. Because it’s so quiet and efficient, pumping at work was not a hassale at all. I was able to pump enough milk to last them throughout their first year.

It’s on the pricer side but it’s 100% worth it.

Included:

  • Built-in breast pump (1)
  • Portable battery pack (1)
  • Removable cooler bag (1)
  • Contoured ice pack (1)
  • Four 5-oz. 150 mL breast milk bottles with lids
  • 1 Double pumping breast pump kit includes: 1 set of PersonalFit Breast Shields 24mm, 2 breast shield connectors, 2 valves and membranes, 1 set of tubing
  • 1 Power Adaptor dual-voltage 110/240V

Lansinoh Nipple Cream

This nipple cream is gold for me. Initially, I used it only when my nipples were dry. Someone mentioned to me that they used it at each pump session! This was such a game-changer! It was perfect for pumping because the cream is thick and protects the delicate skin. Admittedly, clean up was a little greasier but that’s such a small price to pay for the pumping experience once I started using it.

The best thing about this cream is that it is super safe for both mom and baby. It’s 100% natural, pure lanolin and hypoallergenic. It is also free from preservatives, parabens, fragrance or taste.

Another fantastic use is for eczema. Nothing else seemed to work for my daughter and because of the thick, creamy consistency I decided to try it on her and it worked SO WELL! I’ve been recommending it to others and they have found it to be helpful as well.

Lansinoh breastmilk bag

I’ve used quite a few breastmilk bags in my pumping life and there is absolutely no better bag.

These are easy to handle and lay the best for storage which is especially important if you’re building up a freezer stash.

They are also very easy to write on (the date and volume) – you’d think this isn’t an issue, but when you have a large stash, it can get confusing. Some other bags that I have used weren’t easy to write on and it just made things a little difficult.

Perhaps most importantly, these are the most durable bags I’ve ever used. Some of the other bags I have used tore during the freezing process and the last thing you want to do is to waste your baby’s breastmilk when thawing.

OXO bottle brush

I wouldn’t have thought that bottle brushes varied much but this bottle brush is far superior to others that I’ve used.

I especially love it because it cleans really well. The shape and size of the brush allows it to clean the bottom and at the top so easily.

It’s also durable and has it’s own convenient storage stand that is super easy to wash and maintain.

Lansinoh TheraPearl Breast Therapy Pack

Not all moms seem to need this but especially in the early days when the engorgement is out of this world, having these feels like a spa day for your breasts.

TheraPearl 3-in-1 Breast Therapy gel packs provide therapeutic relief for common breastfeeding challenges. Cold therapy helps relieve engorgement while hot therapy encourages milk let-down and helps relieve plugged ducts & mastitis.

TheraPearl Therapy Packs can also be used warm right before pumping to encourage milk let-down and reduce time spent pumping.

Leachco Cuddle-U Basic Nursing Pillow

I know there are moms who like to and perhaps even prefer using a regular pillow. But this nursing pillow has held up really well through 4 babies! It’s soft yet sturdy, multipurpose for baby and most of all it’s extremely comfortable for baby, mom AND dad.

This nursing pillow doubles as a baby lounger with a seat wrap to keep baby safe. It’s also ideal to use for tummy time and support when sitting up.

Water bottle

Of course, any water bottle would choose would be great. I personally didn’t use this bottle but I found it while browsing and fell in love with it. Not only is the message on the bottle so inspiring, but it also features hourly markings to keep you going. It’s made of durable, eco-friendly Tritan and is 100% BPA-Free. As an added bonus, this bottle is stain and odor resistant.

Rainbow Light® Prenatal One Non-GMO Project Verified Multivitamin Plus Superfoods & Probiotics

Definitely consult your doctor for recommendations before using a pre or post natal vitamin.

I try my best to eat well when I’m pregnant and breastfeeding but I’m pretty sure I have many off days. To ensure that baby and I have the best chance of getting all the nutrients we need, I have taken prenatal and breastfeeding vitamins.

The Rainbow Light is my favorite as I found it was the gentlest on my system. These prenatal multivitamins contain a digestive support blend and plant-sourced enzymes and are gentle enough to be taken on an empty stomach.

Back hot/cold gel pad

Sitting to breastfeed as much as a baby needs can be brutal on your back. Similar to the breast pads, these gel pads can be applied both hot and cold and helps to ease your tired back.

The TheraPAC Pad as an adjustable strap that makes it super easy to use while breastfeeding and pumping.

It can also conveniently be used on other parts of your body – knee, arms, hips, legs – to name a few!

Wrapping It Up

These breastfeeding and pumping essentials have proven to be invaluable must haves for all my babies. They’ve all played an instrumental part in my journey to loving breastfeeding and pumping. What are your must-haves to have a better breastfeeding and pumping experience?

Fifth Month Blog Report

Fifth Month Blog Report

I have so much to share in this fifth-month blog report. I’ve changed my growth strategy a bit and I’m excited to share my results and thoughts so far.

From this report onwards, my blog reports are going to look very different. My reports will now reflect growth or declines rather than specific numerical goals for Pageviews and Pinterest stats.

Since the end of my first month, I focused on traffic gains and measuring my blog’s success on that.

Looking for more ways to make money as a stay at home mom? Check out the best jobs for stay at home moms.

What Did I Change To FINALLY see Steady Growth?

I had already decided that in May I was going to relax a bit on the traffic front and focus less on Facebook threads. I knew that most of my traffic was coming from the threads and so I expected a decline (more on this in the traffic section). This decision was made mainly due to constraints on my time.

However, by mid-May, I became incredibly frustrated with the decline of my Pinterest account. I was even more frustrated with my dependency on the Facebook share threads for page views and growing my Pinterest account.

The reality is that I can’t keep up with the threads, continue to write and create pins. The route I was taking to gain traffic and grow Pinterest wasn’t sustainable for my current life situation.

To maintain my page views, I feared that I would need to continue doing Facebook threads long term. So, I needed to figure out a better way to get traffic outside of it. Another issue with doing some Facebook share threads is that they’re very time consuming and may have been worth more if people were participating fairly. Given my stats, I am certain that I was giving more than I was receiving, and that alone suggests that participating in them was a poor use of time.

There are a couple of threads that I will rejoin once things settle with my family because the participants are fair and the groups are very well managed by the owner.

In the meantime though, I made the tough decision of stopping the traffic threads and Pinterest save threads. Instead, my focus shifted to pin creation and I got back into writing new content.

Before continuing, catch up with my first month, second month, third month and fourth month of blogging 🙂

Fifth Month Blog Goals

As you would remember from last month,

May 2020 goals:

  • Blog page views: 9000
  • Blog sessions: 3000
  • Pinterest followers: 300
  • Pinterest unique monthly viewers: 95k

Pageviews

  • Pageviews goal of 9000 missed: dropped from 14,578 to 6859
Curly Bun Mom 5th Month Blog Traffic

By mid-May, I knew I was going to miss my blog traffic goal. I’m not sad about it at all. In fact, I feel happier with the lower pageviews because it reflects a more authentic picture of my audience.

Based on the bounce rate and duration times from visitors on Google Analytics, I realized that by participating in those Facebook traffic threads, I was not hitting my MAIN GOAL for my blog – to help people through my experience.

I’m fairly certain that most of those views were obligatory vs people who actually read my content.

I also realized that my approach was extremely counter productive. I was getting awesome pageviews for a newbie but I wasn’t getting any time to write anymore. Nor did I have time to create and publish one new pin daily.

Another realization and, at the risk of sounding dramatic, fear that I had was that my pageviews had become highly dependent on participating in the Facebook threads.

Right now, I have a surplus of blog posts ready to be published weekly. But when that runs out? How was I going to have time to write, create pins, grow Pinterest, participate in Facebook groups, AND of course see about myself and family?

Promotion is of course, integral to a blog’s success but I don’t think my approach was a smart long term plan.

I had reached a point where something definitely had to give. And instead of taking a set back from the blog, I decided to try to grow it mainly through Pinterest and without Facebook share threads. So far I’m extremely happy about the results, just two weeks in. Even though my traffic is down, my Pinterest presence has grown.

Google Ranking

When I was trying to decide on how to shift focus with my blog growth, my husband pointed out the one fact that basically made the decision for me.

I haven’t been allowing myself to recognize the quality of my blog so far.

I’m currently ranking at #1 for eight of my posts and a few others are on the first page of Google.

Curly Bun Mom Pinterest Growth 5th Month

For the first 2 weeks of May, I was sure that I wasn’t going to hit my Pinterest goals. I was again frustrated as I kept seeing my stats fall. I didn’t obsess over the stats as I previously did but when I checked, it was a downer for sure!

I did over Ell’s Pinterest course and felt inspired by her progress and success. I felt inspired and justified in my new way of thinking that she attained her success without using Facebook share threads.

From May 18, I stopped most of the Facebook share threads and focused on pin creations.

I started stressing less about my pin designs and started whipping up FIVE new pins daily and have been trying out various posting times and strategies.

Throughout May, I was hovering around 89K unique monthly viewers and as you can see from Pinterest Analytics, from May 18, 2020 there has been a steady increase.

On the first day of publishing a new pin (without participating in Facebook share threads), I’ve gone from getting a couple of impressions. clicks and saves to getting up to 1.5K impressions, 20 link clicks and 5 saves.

In June, I’m hoping that by being consistent with my new strategy, I see some great results.

Overall Goals for June 2020

For June, I’m going to continue trying to pin 5 new pins daily and pin to my top boards consistently directly from Pinterest. I’m going to continue pinning 20% of my own and 80% of others until I have enough posts to do more.

Similar to pageviews, I’m not going to have set goals for the stats. Instead, I’ll be tracking and sharing any growth or decline.

I hope this has helped to get a good idea of what a fifth month blog traffic report can look like.. I’d love to hear from you! – What was your experience in your fifth month?

How To Find Time For Yourself As A Mom

(Without Getting Up Before Everyone Else In The House)

how to find time for yourself as a mom - without waking up before everyone else in the house

Learning to find time for yourself as a mom is one of the most important and valuable lessons. As a mom, it feels so incredibly impossible to find time for ourselves. There just aren’t enough hours in the day. It’s easy to brush things off by saying you just don’t have the time.

To get in some quality me-time, some moms recommend getting up before everyone else in the house. I’m thrilled that they have been able to make this work for them. I’ve tried this and it wasn’t for me as I got exceedingly cranky throughout the day and then, of course, I’m still the last one to go to bed.

I need and love sleep. I prefer to get as much sleep as I need as opposed to forcing myself to get up to have some me time and then feeling tired and cranky later in the day.

So I set out to find a better way for me. Surely, with 24 hours in every day, I could find a way to get all that I need to get done and that includes some self-care.

Does Waking Up Earlier Make You More Productive?

Waking up early doesn’t make you more productive—there’s no difference in socioeconomic standing between early risers and night owls. What makes you more productive is becoming deliberate about how you live and work—including with your wakeup ritual.

A life of productivity

I’ve successfully been able to find time for myself without having to wake up before everyone else and I really want to share these tips with you. They can also easily be adopted for moms who work outside of the home.

How To Find Time As A Busy Mom

How to Find Time Throughout The Day for Yourself As A Mom

If you feel like you have no time to yourself, you have to find that time and create. These are the steps I took to free up time to do the things that really matter to me

1. Track your existing day

Perhaps the most important step is to see where you’re currently spending your time. This helps to establish when you can ‘create’ some time for yourself.

Most times it’s not that we don’t have time for ourselves, it’s just that we have to shuffle some things. For instance, ask your partner to take over a chore; or we may most likely need to cut out or cut down on something(s) from our day.

When I downloaded…. and tracked my day, it revealed the shameful amount of time I spent on social media and instant messaging. Without realizing it, I was prioritizing each notification

I took the time to prioritize and create new habits for myself. Now I have more time to focus on what’s really important to me.

Now, my phone stays on silent (apart from my husband and family) and I’ve removed notifications from social media. This allows me to focus when I’m with my kids, hubby, working, doing chores, etc. Once I started doing this not only did I “find” time but there was a significant increase in the quality I was able to give.

2. Understand the Need to Find Time As A Mom

This was also a big issue for me. Making time for myself wasn’t a priority because I didn’t see the importance. I struggled through infertility for so long, that I felt like being a mom was my only identity. I felt like I had to and wanted to spend every waking hour doing things that concerned my kids.

Of course, I burned myself out and sure enough, I was no longer efficient at anything! Yes, I got things done because it’s what I do lol but I was always so tired and stressed. Pouring from an empty cup is no good for anyone!

Once I really understood that it wasn’t just ok, it was necessary to take time for myself, life got a whole lot better.

3. Prioritize Your Life

When you prioritize you’re able to identify what means the most to you and your family. Using the time you tracked, determine what is most important, what can be minimized or cut.

Because “I had no time”, I would try to work while the kids were playing. Of course, this meant that I’d become extremely frustrated as I couldn’t concentrate. I then tried getting up earlier than everyone or staying up way too late and get similarly frustrated.

Now, I set my goals and prioritize everything. I’m now able to plan better and block out times to give my kids, work, chores and myself, quality attention.

4. Create Routines For Your Family

I’m a believer in routines as it helps efficiency with everything! We end up forming habits and things become second nature.

Create and follow a routine to help free up some time by cutting how long chores take.

5. Share The Chore Load

Chore charts are a must with kids! It teaches them responsibility and also eases you up. Kids love to imitate us and they love to feel important and accomplished. Very simple examples are allowing kids to tidy up their toys before moving on to another toy and clearing themselves after a meal.

6. Decide What You Want To Do Beforehand

What may be relaxing for others, may not be what is relaxing for me. For instance screen time for some is a welcomed break but for me, it doesn’t leave me feeling rejuvenated. One of the things I love to do is sit on my porch and enjoy nature.

Deciding ahead of time what you’d like to do when you have your downtime helps to maximize that time. When I started implementing ‘me’ time, I’d spend half of it wondering what I should do. Now that I plan ahead or at least have a few ideas, I’m able to use the entire time just enjoying what I set out to do.

7. Use Nap Times To Your Advantage

Instead of doing chores when the kids are napping, take that time for yourself. Take a nap, pamper yourself, read a book – do whatever makes you happy.

8. Ask For Time Off

When I transitioned from being a full time working mom to working from home, I found I had less time, even though without the commute and so on, I should have had more.

As a working mom, I felt like I had a little more time to myself during the day. However, the early mornings, the commute, the daily work demands come along with the chores, evening activities.

Being a stay at home mom or working from home comes with its own set of challenges. Even though we try to block out times and use routines and schedules, it may still be difficult to fit in some quality rejuvenation time. This is especially true if you’re with your kids 24/7.

Even though we do everything “right”, we still feel like we don’t get sufficient time for ourselves.

In these instances, ask for assistance. Organize with hubby or a family member or friend so that you can have some time.

Take Away

Needless to say, the outcome of ensuring that I have sufficient uninterrupted time has been nothing short of life-changing. I am happier and all of my relationships have improved. My kids are happier. My house and business benefitted drastically as well.

We all have the same number of hours to work with each day and the trick in maximizing your time is in making the right choices for you and your family.

By following the tips above you will most certainly be able to find and capitalize on some much needed time to rejuvenate your soul.

I’d love to hear how you have been able to find time for yourself! I look forward to reading your experience or tips in the comments below and please share if this post has helped you.
